Tates Creek High School ACE Pre-Diploma and IB Diploma
Academic Monitoring Policy

Our goal at Tates Creek High School is for all of our students to be successful. The ACE Pre- Diploma and the International Baccalaureate Programmes are rigorous and demanding programs.  To help to ensure the success of our ACE- Pre Diploma and IB Diploma students we are going to monitor our ACE Pre-Diploma and IB Diploma students’ academic performance.

It is important that parents and students be advised on how to compute a GPA and be given help to better understand how a GPA is achieved and maintained.  We want students and parents to be informed and that they recognize that scholarships and college acceptance often hinges on a GPA of 3.0 and above. We want to do everything we can to help the student achieve and maintain a solid GPA so they may be eligible for merit recognition and scholarships.

To help to ensure the success of our ACE Pre-Diploma and IB Diploma students we will initiate the following Academic Monitoring Support System.

1.    The IB Coordinator will supply the appropriate counseling office personnel with a list of the ACE Pre-Diploma and IB Diploma students so they may run weekly grade checks for all ACE Pre-Diploma and IB Diploma students.  The weekly checks will be given to the IB Coordinator.

2.    Individual classroom teachers will keep students, parents, counselors and the IB Coordinator informed on a bi-monthly or as need basis if a student’s grade falls to below a C. However, if the student maintains a C for a three week period then notification needs to be made to the parent by the classroom teacher.

3.    Teachers will complete the ACE Pre-Diploma or IB Diploma Programme Academic Monitoring Support System Referral form and submit to IB Coordinator for each student whose grade is below a C. These forms will be signed by the IB Coordinator, teacher and student.  The original white copy will be mailed home to the parent by the classroom teacher. The pink copy will be kept by the classroom teacher and the yellow copy will be given to the IB Coordinator.

4.    The IB Coordinator and/or student’s counselor will meet with individual students whose grades are below a C if requested by parent, student, classroom teacher, counselor or IB Coordinator.

5.    If necessary, the IB Coordinator will contact parents/guardians to address student’s academic standing.

6.    Attendance reflects upon grade point average, therefore excessive absences are a concern.  Parents, student, counselor and IB Coordinator should be notified by the classroom teacher if a student misses THREE or more consecutive classes of a any particular class.

7.    Students whose grades fall to below a C, will be directed to additional assistance from the appropriate teacher and/or ESS related services.

8.    Students will be expected to maintain these academic support services until their grades return to a C or better.

9.    If a student continues to struggle in the ACE Pre-Diploma or IB Diploma Programmes a conference with the IB Coordinator, their counselor, parent/guardian and student will be scheduled to determine continuation in the ACE Pre-Diploma or IB Diploma Programme for the next school year.

In each of these steps, the goal is to help the student be successful. All points are to help the student maintain his/her integrity and excitement for learning. It is important that a student not be defeated or fall so far behind in his/her academic standing that he/she cannot rise to a level of academic competition for scholarships and college admissions.
