Honors English I Course Description
Honors English I is a genre survey that includes long and short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and informational text. With each genre, particular attention will be paid to understanding how the author uses genre-specific elements as well as structural and stylistic devices to accomplish their purpose or to create an effect. Instruction during the fall semester provides an introduction to the genres and highlights short and long fiction. Instruction in the spring semester focuses on drama, poetry, and world literature. The course advances student literacy through higher-order thinking skills that promote analysis and application of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and observation strategies.
The course curriculum is designed in sequence with Honors English II to prepare students for the work they will do in the IB Programme during their junior and senior years. To this end, the course curriculum and its assessments are modeled after the curriculum and assessment tools used by IBO. In support of this model, students will do oral presentations (both formal and informal) and analytical, research-based writing.
