Death Note

By:

Tsugumi Ohba

When high school student Light Yagami finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a Shinigami death god, he discovers that any person whose name is written in it dies, so Light decides to use the notebook to rid the world of evil.

NOTE:  This is book one of a Series

"With intense sequences of action and suspense that only graphic novels can offer, Death Note is one of the best manga that the library has to offer. Each chapter will leave you not knowing what to predict, and by the end of each book, you'll find yourself hooked and waiting impatiently for someone to return the next volume. If you love books with suspense and mystery and have an interest in graphic novels, this is a must-read."

Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things

By:

Ted Naifeh

Presenting the initial Courtney Crumrin miniseries in a new diges-sized format. Courtney's parents have dragged her out to a high-to-do suburb to live with her creepy Great Uncle Aloysius in his spooky old house. She's not only the new kid in school, but she also discovers strange things lurking under her bed.

“Courtney, a sort of social outcast (more of a voluntary one), moves to her ancient uncle’s with her materialistic parents.  Her uncle is “old” and needs “taking care of.”  But Uncle A is actually a master of magic and this launches Courtney into a magical world of changelings, monsters, faeires and many other creatures.  It’s great watching her interact with them with her cynical, amusing attitude."

Fullmetal Alchemist

By:

  Hiromu Arakawa

Edward and Alphonse Elric, physically altered by their dabblings in alchemy, become agents of the government whose demands put them in touch with a world of evil alchemists, all in search of the Philosopher's Stone.

Notes:  This is book one of a series.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a Graphic Novel about 2 brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who are alchemists (thus the title.)  Edward has an automail arm and leg, and Alphonse has no physical form.  He is a soul trapped in a suit of armor.  The brothers are this way because they did what was forbidden and tried to bring their mother back to life using alchemy.  Basically, Fullmetal Alchemist is about the two brothers trying to get things back the way they were.”

The Sandman:  Preludes and Nocturnes

By:

Neil Gaiman

An attempt to summon and imprison Death, results, instead, in the capture of Morpheus, the Sandman, who must regain the tools of his powers.

Notes:  Considered to be one of the best examples of Graphic Novels.

“It weaves the tale of Morpheus, the personification of Dreams, trying to get his realm, Sand of Dreams, and the ruby that almost controls reality back after being imprisoned by a magician for 80 years.  It is the first in the Sandman series, and has lovely pacing, expressive art, and is just glorious in almost every way."
