Acceptable Use Policy

Through its computer system and the Internet, Tates Creek High School offers students the ability to explore thousands of libraries, databases, bulletin boards, and other resources while exchanging messages with people around the world. Access to the school's computer system and the Internet is a privilege, not a right. Thus, students are expected use this privilege in an appropriate and responsible manner. Tates Creek High School has determined that the following Acceptable Use Policy shall govern student use of the school's electronic resources.

The following student behaviors are NOT permitted:

1. Using the Internet and other technology resources without proper authorization or for purposes other

than school related instructional activities Or research. 

 

    The school's technology has a limited educational purpose and is not to be used for recreational purposes. Students who have not returned an Acceptable Use Policy permission form signed by their parent or legal guardian may not have independent use of the internet or e-mail services.

2.  Using the Internet, the school's e-mail system or any other school technology to access, review, upload, download, store, print, post or distribute materials which are inappropriate in an educational setting.

 

    This includes, but is not limited to, materials which: a) are obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar or sexually explicit; b) are abusive, rude, inflammatory, disrespectful or threatening towards an individual or group; c) contain either personal attacks or false or defamatory information about an individual or organization; d) advocate violence or any other illegal act; e) use language or images which are inappropriate to the educational setting or are disruptive to the educational process; f) advocate discrimination toward other people or may constitute harassment or discrimination; g) could cause damage or danger of disruption.

3. Violating copyright laws and/or plagiarism. 

        This includes, but is not limited to: downloading, exchanging or making illegal jopies of copyrighted or pirated software; downloading or copying shareware without registering the software and paying licensing fees as required; copying any unauthorized software onto the schools network; or using information from the internet (including pictures) without securing the author's permission or properly citing your source.

4.   Interfering with the integrity of the schools network system or any other system.  

     This includes, but is not limited to, tampering with, modifying, disrupting or degrading a computer workstation, the school's network, the school's web site, or the school's e-mail system, through either the intentional spreading of computer viruses or through any other means.

5.  Attempting or aiding others in attempting to exceed authorized access to restricted or protected
programs, files, data, computers, or network resources.  

        This includes but is not limited to: attempting to log on as
someone else; "stealing" passwords by observing someone type them; attempting to trespass into someone else's files; attempting to bypass
workstation or network security settings (hacking); accessing secured programs or files by intentionally bypassing school security; revealing
passwords or; passing along known security loopholes to others. If a student accidentally discovers a security problem, he/she must
immediately notify their teacher or the school's Computer Resource Teacher.

6.  Wasting limited consumable or electronic resources.  

        This includes, but is not limited to: printing multiple copies;
printing unnecessary material; exceeding a reasonable amount of file storage space on network drives by failing to delete files which are no
longer necessary; failing to delete e-mail messages; downloading very large files to the schools network; posting of "chain" letters through e-mail; or "spamming" (sending an unnecessary message to a large number of people).

7.  Violating personal safety/privacy guidelines.  

        This includes, but is not limited to, students posting private "contact"
information about themselves or other persons such as addresses, telephone numbers, school addresses, work addresses, identification
number's, account numbers, access codes or passwords, or re-posting a message that was sent for private use without permission of the person
who sent the message.

 

8.   Other unethical uses of the school's network system.

 

9.   Using the school's computers or other electronic resources for commercial purposes.

        This includes offering, advertising, purchasing or providing products or services.

 

10.  Damaging, defacing or theft of any part of the computer hardware, software or the network.

 

11. Illegal activity or other activity that violates either Fayette County School Policy or Tates Creek Policy.

 

    This includes, but is not limited to: gambling, arranging the sale or use of drugs; the purchase of alcohol; sending a bomb threat; engaging in criminal gang activity; or threatening the life of someone.
