TCHS Track and Field Update!
January 22, 2006
Our first meet has ended and the athletes at TCHS have shined. With over 45 athletes competing in the Wildcat Classic, we were one of the largest teams in the venue. We competed in ever event except the girl’s 60m hurdles and boys 2 mile. This meet was not scored, but if it were, our boy’s team would have won!
Our athletes took home 10 medals. Latonya Buckner placed 3rd in the 60m dash beating 88 other girls! The boy’s 400m highlighted 3 TCHS runners in the top ten. Ken Vereen took home the gold with his impressive come from behind 51.02. Thomas Jenkins placed 4th and Quinton Wingate finished 6th in the crowded field of 118 athletes. Brad Greenman regained his freshmen competitiveness by winning his heat and placing 5 in the boy’s 800m run. Brad has been out for two years due to a medical condition and has been itching at his heals to start running again. He showed everyone that he has returned! Bridget Stichnot placed 4th in the girl’s 2-mile. Our guy’s 1600m relay squad ran a very competitive race that featured many bumps and pushes. In the end, they finished 6 seconds ahead of the nearest team earning them 4 medals! My biggest surprise of the day was our boys 3200m relay. With only 1 returning member of last year’s team, I was hoping for a top 5 finish. Brad Greenman led off and established TCHS in the lead. Sophomore Daniel Norman was asked to hold what ever position Brad gave him. Daniel ran hard, surged when he needed to a held the lead for freshmen Braxton Adkins. Braxton was running in is FIRST high school meet with nerves that would have equaled a 9.0 earthquake. Braxton ran an amazing race and gave Joe Goodin a third place position. Joe went out hard and quickly caught up to duPont Manuel and Eastern High School’s team. Since there were so many teams running not many people realized what Joe did until the announcer informed us that Tates Creek was in the lead. Joe completed his leg with a 2:05 and winning the last event of the day with over 3 seconds to spare!

Our next meet is February 11 at the Volunteer Classic in Knoxville. We will bring a small team of jumpers since the track is not suitable for racing. This will give athletes like Derrick Brown, Darae Gordon, Dale Smith, Laura Futch, and Jayme Hawthorne a chance to shine. More details regarding this trip will be made available soon.
